Helping Sahiba regain her vision
Meet Sahiba, a student in our computer lab program. Sahiba started our program last year and quickly became a role model for her class. She worked hard, enjoyed her lessons, and was always happy to help her peers.
One day, a program volunteer noticed Sahiba wasn’t in her usual spot. The volunteer contacted her parents to check on her, but her parents had upsetting news; Sahiba was suffering from a congenital eye condition and was losing her sight.
Eye conditions are common in rural India and are often too expensive for families to treat. Determined to help, our program volunteer contacted CL Gupta, the top eye care institute in Moradabad, UP. Dr. Ashi Khurana, a leading ophthalmologist at the institute, quickly responded and prescribed Sahiba glasses. In addition, Dr. Ashi developed a treatment plan that includes bi-annual checkups and manageable study schedules. Thanks to a quick intervention, Dr. Ashi is confident Sahiba will recover and return to her favorite spot in class soon.
To ensure no other student has to face the challenges of untreated eye conditions, we now equip our classrooms with a portable autorefractor – a handheld machine that screens eyes for vision impairment. Every student is screened and all concerns are brought to our panel hospital, Sitapur Eye Hospital Shahjahanpur. Many children suffer from poor eyesight or eye disease and don’t even know it. With accessible screenings and treatment, we can now prevent permanent vision loss.
